Huston: Storm Recovery Continues as FEMA Deadline Approaches

Hoosiers affected by August's severe storms and flooding are reminded to apply for federal disaster assistance before the Oct. 25 deadline as state officials continue working to help families recover and secure long-term housing.

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is advancing a coordinated housing strategy focused on assisting those displaced by the storms and flooding. The effort will move residents from the state's existing hotel voucher program into appropriate temporary or longer-term housing solutions.

Caseworkers from Tidal Basin, the contractor working with the state, will be contacting eligible survivors directly to assist them with this transition.

Eligible residents whose homes remain uninhabitable may qualify for FEMA rental assistance for up to 18 months while repairs are completed. More than 34,000 applications for FEMA assistance have been approved, with more than $140 million in federal assistance provided or allocated to storm survivors. Indiana has also distributed more than $32 million through its State Disaster Relief Fund, while debris removal crews have cleared approximately 80,000 cubic yards of debris from more than 30 communities.

State officials are also pursuing additional federal assistance to help residents whose housing needs cannot be met through existing rental options.

Hoosiers in need of assistance should take note of the following deadlines and resources:

Oct. 25 – FEMA Individual Assistance deadline: Apply online at  or call 800-621-3362.

Nov. 24 – State Disaster Relief Fund deadline: Apply through IDHS. For help starting an application, call Indiana 211.

Additional recovery resources: Call 211 or 866-211-9966 for information about available housing, food, cleanup assistance and other local services.
