Note to the Press: Please include the following statements from Vigo County legislators in your coverage of Indiana lawmakers on Tuesday voting to override the governor's veto of House Enrolled Act 1041, which protects the integrity of girls' sports. House Enrolled Act 1041 ensures biological males do not compete in K-12 girls' sports. The vote came as part of a one-day technical corrections session, where lawmakers can take up any vetoes and fix technical errors in laws passed during the prior session. Indiana will join at least 16 other states that have similar laws on the books protecting female sports:
STATEHOUSE (May 24, 2022) – "This law simply ensures there's a level playing field for K-12 girls' sports in Indiana. Athletes work hard to earn playing time, starting positions and scholarships, and girls deserve equal opportunities to compete and win," said State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute), co-author of House Enrolled Act 1041.
"I've heard from so many parents who are concerned about maintaining fair competition in girls' sports. That's why I voted to override this veto and protect our female athletes," said State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil).
"There's an obvious difference in the physiological makeup of males and females, and we need to continue recognizing that in Hoosier K-12 sports. It's vitally important we continue to defend the integrity of girls' sports," said State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville).
