Note to the press: Vigo County lawmakers provided the following statements after House and Senate lawmakers passed House Enrolled Act 1002 on Tuesday providing tax relief to hardworking Hoosiers. If signed into law, the bill will drop the state's individual income tax from 3.23% to 2.9% over seven years. Once fully phased in, Indiana would have one of the lowest income tax rates in the nation. The bill will also help lower utility bills for Hoosiers and businesses by eliminating the 1.46% Utility Receipts Tax currently paid on electricity, natural gas, water, steam, sewage and telephone bills. According to lawmakers, once both tax cuts are fully implemented, Hoosiers would save over $1 billion a year. The legislation also includes using reserves to make a one-time, $2.5 billion payment toward pre-'96 teacher pension obligations.
STATEHOUSE (March 10, 2022) – "It truly is an honor to be part of a legislature that helped bring about the largest tax cut in our state's history. It's important we ensure these dollars stay with those who earned them, especially during a time of high inflation," said State Rep. "Returning money to taxpayers while maintaining a streamlined state government that funds essential services and invests in a brighter future is one of the most important things we can do. These tax cuts are possible because of this philosophy, and come at a time when many working families are dealing with budget strains," said State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil).
"I know how hard Hoosiers work to earn a living. They deserve to keep more of their money and decide for themselves the best way to save and spend it. I joined my fellow Republicans in prioritizing these tax cuts, and will continue to advocate for a state government that lives within its means," said State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville).
