STATEHOUSE (May 18, 2026) – "On National Police Week, we commemorate and honor the more than 730,000 officers who serve and protect our communities in the United States, including the dedicated men and women who serve in Parke, Vermillion, Clay, Fountain and Vigo counties.
"On May 15, our nation observes Peace Officers Memorial Day, remembering and honoring the officers and their families who made the ultimate sacrifice. Nearly 25,000 officers have died in the line of duty dating back to the first death in 1786, with 491 of those being officers who died in the service of Indiana communities. A federal law was enacted in 1994 authorizing the flag of the United States to be lowered to half-staff on this day to honor our fallen law enforcement heroes and their families.
"The toll of this work extends beyond the physical and affects every law enforcement officer. Officers typically face more than 170 traumatic events during their career, contributing to a 54% higher suicide rate among officers than other workers. We owe it to the men and women who protect our communities to ensure that they have the support and resources they need both on and off duty.
"Thanks to the highly professional efforts of our officers, our nation has experienced a dramatic and sustained reduction in crime since 2022, with national data for 2025 showing a 21% drop in homicides compared to the previous year.
"To every officer serving across Indiana, I give my deepest thanks. Your service and sacrifices are a testament to your commitment to our communities, and it will always be recognized and appreciated."
