Note to the Press – State Rep. Joanna King (R-MIddlebury) issued the following statement in response to the Indiana General Assembly passing Senate Enrolled Act 1 (ss), and Senate Enrolled Act 2 (ss) supporting Hoosier mothers and unborn children:
STATEHOUSE (Aug. 12, 2022) – "The special session marked a historic moment for our families and for the preservation of life. Many estimate that Indiana's new law could end about 95% of abortions or more in our state – saving thousands of innocent lives each year. To support pregnant women, the new law moves abortion procedures to hospitals or hospital-owned ambulatory centers where we can ensure they will be surrounded by the best possible care. There are many centers around the state that are welcoming women who are looking for support and resources during their pregnancy. We also doubled down on protections to ensure Hoosier women will not be criminalized in any way. These are all big steps in the right direction, and I look forward to continuing this momentum when session begins in January.
"We also directed $74 million to increase resources, services and help available to support healthy moms and babies, and foster and adoptive families. Our goal is to boost access to care and counseling for new moms and dads, crisis resources and childcare, as well as community-based programs. As we move forward, we'll keep our focus on how we can increase maternal and infant health in our state, which is critical to giving families a healthy start and life together. As a community, I believe it's also important for all of us to do our part to better support, encourage and lift up the women and babies in our lives."
