Prescott: Portland Safe Haven Baby Box will help save lives

Note to the press: Please include the following statement from State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) in your coverage of Tuesday's unveiling of the Portland Fire Department's Safe Haven Baby Box. Save Haven Baby boxes are temperature-controlled incubators outfitted with a dual-alarm system so that action can be taken immediately when a baby is placed inside. Under Indiana's Safe Haven Law, newborns less than 30 days old can be safely and anonymously surrendered to a medical provider or law enforcement agency without any questions asked as long as there are no signs of intentional abuse and the baby is left in good faith. This is the 91st baby box to be installed in Indiana and the 126th in the nation.

STATEHOUSE (Nov. 22, 2022) – "Thank you to the Portland Fire Department, city officials and all of those who had a hand in making this Safe Haven Baby Box a reality. This welcomed addition to our community will help parents in crisis and bring awareness to our state's Safe Haven Law. This device has saved lives across the state and given hope to struggling new moms who wanted their child to have a better life."
