Note to the press: Morgan County lawmakers provided the following statements after House and Senate lawmakers passed House Enrolled Act 1002 on Tuesday providing tax relief to hardworking Hoosiers. If signed into law, the bill will drop the state's individual income tax from 3.23% to 2.9% over seven years. Once fully phased in, Indiana would have one of the lowest income tax rates in the nation. The bill will also help lower utility bills for Hoosiers and businesses by eliminating the 1.46% Utility Receipts Tax currently paid on electricity, natural gas, water, steam, sewage and telephone bills. According to lawmakers, once both tax cuts are fully implemented, Hoosiers would save over $1 billion a year. The legislation also includes using reserves to make a one-time, $2.5 billion payment toward pre-'96 teacher pension obligations.

STATEHOUSE (March 11, 2022) – "Saving Hoosier taxpayers over $1 billion a year is a result of our commitment to being prudent with the state's budget. Citizens will continue to see a reduction in their income tax rate in the coming years and have lower utility bills following the repeal of the utility receipts tax. Indiana is a state that lives within its means, and I look forward to once again discussing tax cuts during next year's budget session," said State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

"Years of fiscal responsibility and paying down debt left us room to make the largest tax cut in Indiana's history. Hoosiers know best when it comes to spending and investing the money they earned. We'll continue promoting a limited government that works for the people, not the other way around," said State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

"Being good stewards of taxpayer money is the most important responsibility legislators have. We continue to responsibly pay down debt in a significant way, which will provide tremendous flexibility moving forward," said State Rep. John Young (R-Franklin).
