Note to the Press – House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) and State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) issued the following statements regarding the House Republican budget amendment released today:
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 17, 2023) – "Our budget makes significant investments in Hoosiers' priorities, pays down debt, maintains healthy reserves and responsibly cuts taxes. The plan would increase K-12 tuition support by $1.6 billion – a nearly 11% increase over the next two years. We also support parents by eliminating fees on textbooks and curriculum materials. To empower families, our budget expands Indiana's top-ranked school choice program by increasing eligibility to include the majority of Indiana's students. We also invest one-time dollars from the state's reserves in initiatives to help Hoosier families, improve infrastructure and promote economic development. Tax cuts in our budget plan would save taxpayers nearly $625 million this biennium. We look forward to moving the ball forward and working with our Senate colleagues to take our priorities across the goal line," said House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers).
"The House Republican budget plan presents opportunities for all Hoosiers. From students and families to taxpayers and retirees, we can continue propelling all residents of Indiana forward. Our proposal significantly cuts taxes while making, yet again, record investments in K-12 education. We are in a strong financial position, and are able to take care of our immediate needs and wisely invest in our state's future. This plan upholds the same conservative fiscal values that got us here in the first place by maintaining reserves, living within our means and paying down debt. I look forward to presenting this budget proposal to my House and Senate colleagues, and working hard to pass House Bill 1001," said State Rep.
