Note to the Press – House Speaker Todd Huston (R-Fishers) issued the following statement in response to today's House passage of legislation supporting Indiana taxpayers, and Hoosier mothers and unborn children. Senate Bill 1 (ss) and Senate Bill 2 (ss) now move to the Indiana Senate for further consideration.
STATEHOUSE (Aug. 5, 2022) – “Today, House lawmakers did what's right by taxpayers. Under the amended Senate Bill 2, Hoosier tax filers will receive an additional automatic taxpayer refund of $200 or $400 for a married couple filing jointly. Our state's economy continues to outperform expectations, and we’ve shown that we can pay down debt, make critical investments, and responsibly return tax dollars to hard-working Hoosiers. We look forward to continuing this positive momentum as we head into the next legislative session in January.
"Senate Bill 2 includes strong investments to support healthy pregnancies, babies and families, including foster and adoptive families, by directing $74 million to state agencies and proven non-governmental programs that support maternal and infant health. This legislation will also increase access to care and counseling for new moms and dads, crisis resources, childcare and funding for community-based programs. Moving forward, we'll continue discussions about how Indiana can do more for Hoosier families, including increasing access to and affordability of contraception and health care services.
"If passed, Senate Bill 1 would take a giant step toward improving protections for Hoosier women and the unborn. We've heard from countless Hoosiers across the state who've shared their personal and emotional stories, and I'm thankful for their testimony. I believe these have been the most difficult and contentious issues before the state legislature, but Indiana has found a thoughtful way forward that shows compassion for both mothers and babies."
