Note to the Press – State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis), chair of the House Education Committee, issued the following statement in response to Indiana ranking sixth in the nation for reading according to the 2024 National Assessment of Education Progress:
STATEHOUSE (Jan. 29, 2025) – “Thank you to our teachers, parents and students for all of their hard work in making Indiana one of the top states for literacy. This historic ranking is a testament to the dedication of our schools in helping Hoosier students get back on track academically following the pandemic disruptions. Our state has been focused on tackling declining literacy scores – from establishing new science of reading standards and expanding funding for summer school programs to assessing students sooner and providing needed intervention so they don't fall behind. These results from the nation's report card demonstrate our actions are working. And while Indiana's math scores also improved with fourth graders, our work continues to ensure students have the academic knowledge that's necessary for success after graduation."
