Internships can give college students and recent graduates hands-on experience and real-world skills that could set them up for future success.
During college, I interned at the Indiana Statehouse, and it opened doors not only for me to pursue my passion of becoming an attorney but also sparked my interest in public service. Now, as a state legislator, I want to encourage students from our area to reap the rewards of interning with our state legislature.
Interns with the Indiana House of Representatives not only get a first-hand look at how laws are made in our state, but they gain new skills and develop professional relationships. House interns are paid $900 biweekly as they work at the Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis during the 2024 legislative session, which begins in January and concludes mid-March.
The opportunity is open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors, from biology to journalism. Interns develop important skills in communications, time management and prioritization as they work with legislators and staff in 1 of 3 departments. Those interning with legislative operations assist constituents and help track committee activity. In the communications department, interns can help write press releases and email newsletters, and work with social media, graphic design and audio/video production. The policy department seeks interns to help research, track and analyze legislation.
No matter a student's career goals and interests, this internship is a great opportunity to test their classroom knowledge, connect with leaders and employers from across the state, and strengthen their resume. My journey from student to attorney and now a state legislator, all started with an internship at the Statehouse. I hope local college students and recent graduates in our community apply for a paid internship with the Indiana House of Representatives, which could lead to full-time employment in state government or the private sector.
The deadline to apply for an internship is Oct. 31. To learn more and apply online today, visit indianahouserepublicans.com/internship.
