Zimmerman Column: Helping to keep Hoosier homes warm

Posted by: Charles Melton  | Wednesday, November 15, 2023

Over the past few weeks, temperatures have dropped, with some nights and early mornings below freezing. With this chilly weather, Hoosiers are beginning to turn on their heating systems, but some could face trouble paying their utility bills this winter.

No Hoosier should be left in the cold. Thankfully, the state's Energy Assistance Program can help keep electricity and gas on as utility bills rise.

We all have plenty of expenses on our plates already, from rent and mortgage payments to buying groceries and gas. These costs can add up quickly and strain budgets. Through EAP, Hoosiers struggling to pay for utilities can apply for a one-time annual benefit assisting with home energy payments.

To begin the process, visit in.gov/ihcda, click on "Homeowners & Renters," and create an account. Those accepted will receive a one-time annual benefit to help pay for home energy costs. It's important to note that EAP does not cover all home energy expenses, so continue to pay bills as often as possible. Applicants can expect to hear back in about 55 days if eligible. If you are receiving a direct payment benefit, it could take up to 120 days from the date of approval.

Hoosiers can call or dial 211 to connect with the local resources they need at any time.

Applications for EAP are open through May 20, 2024, but don't delay if you need assistance. Visit in.gov/ihcda to learn more about the program and start the application process.
