STATEHOUSE (April 21, 2021) – State Rep. Tim Wesco's (R-Osceola) legislation creating a permanent vehicle registration for lightweight trailers could soon be law.
Trailers are a type of non-motorized vehicle used for storage, typically hitched to the bumper of a car or truck and pulled behind. According to Wesco, for a trailer to qualify for a permanent registration under his legislation, it must weigh 3,000 pounds or less.
"Other states like Michigan already have permanent registrations for trailers, which saves drivers' time and money," Wesco said. "This is a convenient way for people who have a small trailer in their garage or backyard to continue to use it without having to think about renewing that registration every single year, so long as they live in Indiana."
Currently, the price for an annual registration of a trailer this size is $16.35. Under Wesco's bill, the permanent registration fee would be $82. He said these permanent permits will be available for Hoosiers in 2022. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles reported there are 424,000 trailers with weights up to 3,000 lbs. registered with the state.
House Enrolled Act 1356 now heads to the governor for consideration as a new law. For more information, visit iga.in.gov.
