STATEHOUSE (Aug. 23, 2022) – Longstanding Wells County family farms recently received Hoosier Homestead awards for being in operation for 100 years or more, according to local legislators.
The Minnich Farm, in operation since 1860, received a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award, and the Captain Farm, in operation since 1917, received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award.
"Our communities and state are stronger because of longstanding farming families who dedicate their livelihoods to the agriculture industry," said State Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne). "It's certainly not getting any easier to run a family farm, and I commend these local Hoosiers on their commitment and work ethic."
These farm families were among more than 100 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
"When driving through our district, I pass by fields and farms and wonder how these operations started," said State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle). "With the Hoosier Homestead awards, families and the state get to take time to understand the history of each awarded farm and celebrate past and present family farmers who tirelessly worked to maintain a great level of success. I congratulate each family for this impressive accomplishment."
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"Congratulations to these Wells County families for reaching such a significant milestone," said State Rep. Ann Vermilion (R-Marion). "These local farming operations withstood the test of time and contribute greatly to our state's strong agricultural heritage."
Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. Since its inception in 1976, more than 5,800 farms received the designation as Hoosier Homesteads.
