STATEHOUSE (Aug. 16, 2018) — Wayne County family farms were recognized Friday at the Indiana State Fair for being in operation for 100 years or more, according to State Rep. Dick Hamm (R-Richmond) and State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond).
The Alexander Farm, located in Richmond and in operation since 1897, received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award.
“There are over 56,000 farming operations in Indiana, many of which are family-owned,” Hamm said. “Family farms are a key part of our state’s agriculture industry. I appreciate the Alexander Farm’s commitment to our community.”
The Martin Farm, located in Williamsburg and in operation since 1909, was also presented a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award.
“It is an incredible accomplishment to successfully run and operate a farm for over 100 years,” Raatz said. “These families truly deserve special recognition for their dedication to their farms and Indiana’s agriculture community. Congratulations!”
The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. Families can qualify for the centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial award.
Each year, two awards ceremonies are held in the spring and summer commemorating the achievements of farm families across the state. For more information on the Hoosier Homestead Award Program, visit www.in.gov/isda/2337.htm.
