STATEHOUSE (Sept. 6, 2023) – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.
State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) said House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.
"No matter your major, there is a lot of value in interning with our team," May said. "We welcome students with different backgrounds and experiences, as long as they want to work hard and learn."
State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.
"This is an excellent opportunity, and the Statehouse is a great place to develop skills and build lifelong connections," Lucas said. "Being an intern with us is more than just a part-time position, it's a transformational learning experience where students can launch their careers."
Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
According to State Rep. Karen Engleman (R-Georgetown), students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations.
"For students looking to build their resumes, this internship will give them the tools to succeed," Engleman said. "The knowledge, skills and connections they get here will give them a head start on any career path."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
