STATEHOUSE (Aug. 30, 2023) – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.
According to State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute), House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.
"This paid internship is a great way for young Hoosiers to develop skills that will help them in any professional setting," Heaton said. "It's also an opportunity to meet and work alongside leaders from across the state."
State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.
"Whether it's helping residents, researching policy or assisting with media questions, students and new grads can showcase their skills in a variety of ways," Morrison said. "Spots are limited, so don't wait to apply."
Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"It's always great to see young professionals get hands-on experience during the legislative session," said State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville). "These internships look good on resumes and can often lead to a full-time job."
Students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations.
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
