STATEHOUSE (Oct. 29, 2024) – Nominations are now being accepted for the state's first-ever award recognizing Hoosier first responders who are killed or seriously injured in an act of public service, thanks to legislation supported by local lawmakers.
State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil) said the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor honors firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement and others who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of the first responder's life above and beyond the call of duty.
"First responders dedicate their lives to protecting ours, often putting themselves in harm's way," Morrison said. "This award is a meaningful tribute to the exceptional men and women who serve our state with such courage and determination."
To be eligible for the award, an individual must be an Indiana first responder, such as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, corrections officer, public safety telecommunicator, EMS worker, emergency management service provider, county coroner, deputy coroner, public safety agency employee, or volunteer whose duties include rapid emergency response.
"Our first responders are true heroes who act with courage and compassion in the toughest situations," said State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute). "This award is a powerful way to recognize their outstanding commitment to protecting our families and neighborhoods."
"Recognizing the extraordinary courage and dedication of our first responders is a small way to say thank you for their commitment," said State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville). "These are individuals who run toward danger, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude."
