STATEHOUSE (Oct. 21, 2022) Vigo County legislators encourage college students and recent graduates to apply for a paid Statehouse internship before the Oct. 31 deadline.

State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) said college sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as recent graduates and graduate students of all majors can apply for an internship with the Indiana House of Representatives. House interns will be paid $800 bi-weekly while working at the Indiana Statehouse in downtown Indianapolis during the 2023 legislative session, starting in January and concluding at the end of April.

"Many of our previous interns used this experience as a starting point for rewarding careers in the public and private sectors, and to even run for elected office," Heaton said. "I encourage students to submit their applications before all available positions are taken."

State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil) said interested Hoosiers should visit indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and complete the application before Oct. 31. Intern interviews are currently taking place to fill positions in legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations departments.

"No matter what your major is, you'll be able to apply your knowledge in a variety of roles during the legislative session," Morrison said. "This internship exposes students to many industries and professionals, and can lead to future job opportunities."

"We rely on our interns to help ensure the session runs smoothly," said State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville). "This program is a great way for them to build skills they can use in any career and develop contacts that can open doors to employment."

Internships are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
