STATEHOUSE (July 5, 2023) – State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne) recently received the Distinguished Service Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars for his work helping Hoosier veterans and military members.
"It's truly a tremendous honor to receive this award," Judy said, a member of the VFW. "As a veteran, I always want to do my best to support my brothers and sisters in uniform. I know how important this legislation is for our military men and women, and I will continue to be a voice for them at the Statehouse."
Judy, a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, co-authored a new law this year giving active-duty military members a complete income tax exemption beginning in January regardless of their deployment status. Judy said National Guard and reserve members already receive a $5,000 deduction, and a full income tax exemption when mobilized or on duty.
He also supported House Enrolled Act 1056 to designate a second Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Indiana, and expand opportunities for more military members and their loved ones to be buried at the Jefferson County or Tippecanoe County cemeteries.
As co-author of House Enrolled Act 1511, Judy successfully worked to expand college tuition benefits for the children of veterans with disabilities.
"Representative Judy has always been a great advocate on behalf of the VFW," said Richard Leirer, the state commander for the VFW. "He did a tremendous job this legislative session helping veterans and military members, and we are glad he is part of our team."
The VFW provides a variety of services to vets, including help with filing VA claims for disability compensation, appealing claims decisions and transportation. To learn more about the VFW of Indiana, click here.
