STATEHOUSE (June 13, 2018) – Gov. Eric Holcomb on Monday ceremonially signed into law legislation co-authored by State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) updating Indiana Code concerning Hoosier chiropractors’ professional standards and scope of practice.
VanNatter, chair of the House Committee on Employment, Labor and Pensions, said there has not been a change in chiropractic licensure law for over 30 years.
“This long-overdue update to the statute concerning chiropractors will ensure they receive training in new technology and modernized practices of care that have emerged over the years,” VanNatter said. “This new law also expands licensed chiropractors’ scope of professional practice to reflect their training, allowing them to diagnose and treat certain conditions without the usage of drugs or surgery, avoiding professional overlap with licensed medical doctors.”
According to VanNatter, to ensure individuals receive training in the new practices, the law increases the required number of semester hours of education an applicant needs to apply for a license to practice chiropractic medicine from 60 to 90. The new education standards will go into effect June 30, 2021.
