STATEHOUSE (June 22, 2018) — Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch presented a Golden Hoosier Award to Marilyn Skinner of Kokomo at the Statehouse Thursday for her service and commitment to the community, according to State Sen. Jim Buck (R-Kokomo) and State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo).
“Marilyn’s strong commitment to education is admirable,” Buck said. “Her constant involvement with the Kokomo School Corporation and passion to help the community grow have impacted so many people. We are proud of her for receiving this award.”
Skinner started her career as a teacher with the Kokomo School Corp. in 1958. By the time she retired in 1996, Skinner had served as part of the school administration, including principal and as the first female assistant superintendent. She later created the Very Early Childhood Education Center to provide children and parents free opportunities to learn and grow. In 2012, Skinner helped raise $1.8 million as campaign chair for the United Way of Howard County, which offers education, finance and health services to residents of Howard and Tipton counties.
“Marilyn’s volunteer work and compassion for local children is well-regarded,” VanNatter said. “As a longtime, engaged citizen of Howard County, Marilyn has served a number of local organizations from the Salvation Army to the Kokomo School Education Foundation. Her dedication to early childhood development has had a considerable impact on our community.”
The lieutenant governor’s office accepts nominations each year for the Golden Hoosier Awards. The award recognizes outstanding Hoosiers for their lifetime of service to their communities, and is the highest honor bestowed on those in Indiana who are at least 65 years old.
