STATEHOUSE (July 26, 2023) – Area legislators recently received interim study committee appointments and will take a deep dive into issues facing Hoosiers as they prepare for the next legislative session in January.

Lawmakers serve on interim committees throughout the summer and fall to examine policy topics, gather public input and recommend potential legislation.

State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) will serve as vice chair of the Interim Study Committee on Corrections and Criminal Code. She will also serve on the Justice Reinvestment Advisory Council and the Board of Trustees of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.

"Input from members of law enforcement, mental health experts and the public help us craft legislation going into the 2024 session that works for Hoosiers across the board," McNamara said. "I look forward to working with my colleagues as we gather data and work on ways to continue to improve Indiana's justice system."

State Rep. Tim O'Brien (R-Evansville) will serve as a member of the Land Use Task Force, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition Commission.

"Preserving prime agricultural land, particularly as we see increasing economic development and population growth, is an important issue as the state and local communities plan for the future," O'Brien said. "I look forward to hearing from farmers and other stakeholders on this topic as part of my role on the Land Use Task Force. Our goal is to use data gathered from the state's inventory of lost farmland to help us develop policy solutions that locals can use to make better planning decisions."

State Rep. Matt Hostettler (R-Pakota) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Employment and Labor, and the Interim Study Committee on Public Policy.

"Professionals with occupational licenses who are moving to Indiana should be able to continue working in their chosen careers without going through mountains of red tape," Hostettler said. "We need to make that transition as seamless as possible, so that new residents can start working more quickly and put down roots here. As part of the committee on employment, I look forward to diving into this issue and seeing how we can make the process better."

Members of the public are welcomed to attend and testify at committee hearings, which typically occur at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Hearings are also livestreamed and archived online at iga.in.gov, where committee calendars and meeting agendas are posted.
