Supporting Hoosier students and families

 Supporting Hoosier students and families

Supporting Southwest Indiana's students and families is a top priority this legislative session, and that's why I'm supporting a pair of bills aimed at doing just that.

We continue to see more jobs require certifications for employees, like those who work in the automotive or manufacturing industry. According to the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, 74% of surveyed employers said jobs were left open due to unqualified applicants. To keep Indiana's economy moving forward, it is critical we rethink how our most valuable asset – Hoosiers – are trained to join the workforce.

Whether a student pursues a two- or four-year degree, or employment upon high school graduation, we need to ensure they are prepared to succeed. That's why I'm supporting House Bill 1002, which would provide flexibility for students by expanding work-based learning, apprenticeships and internship opportunities in high schools. By allowing quality, work-based learning to count toward graduation requirements, students can hit the ground running and be better prepared to join the workforce. This is a great opportunity not only for students, but employers to make much-needed connections.

To cut costs for Hoosier families, I authored legislation to eliminate textbook fees. A report from the Education Commission of States found Indiana to be 1 of only 8 states where parents must pay for textbook fees, sometimes shelling out thousands of dollars each school year. Cutting these fees, which often rise as students get older, comes at a time when families face record-high inflation. I look forward to continuing to push for this legislation, which is also a top priority for Gov. Eric Holcomb.

Empowering and supporting Hoosier students and families is a top priority. Please reach out by emailing h78@iga.in.gov or calling 317-232-9815 with questions or inputs. It's an honor to represent friends and neighbors in Vanderburgh and Warrick counties, and I look forward to continuing to work on your behalf.
