STATEHOUSE (Jan. 10, 2017) — State Rep. Holli Sullivan (R-Evansville) today announced she will co-author legislation aimed at reducing the number of Hoosier deaths from cervical cancer.

Sullivan formally helped announce the plan at the Statehouse today where she was joined at a press conference by fellow state lawmakers and officials from health organizations across Indiana.

“Hoosier women continue to die from this preventable disease,” Sullivan said. “Since the late 1990s, the mortality rate in the state has remained steady at 2.6 percent of women. Through education, we could finally see this number go down statewide.”

Sullivan said the proposal she co-authored would require the Indiana State Health Department to develop a plan to decrease Indiana’s cervical cancer mortality rate. Specifically, ISDH would be tasked with identifying barriers to cervical cancer prevention, screening and treatment, developing public and private partnerships to increase cancer awareness, and recommending actions to reduce the number of deaths associated with the disease. If passed, the legislation would require ISDH to submit a report outlining their strategic plan to the governor and General Assembly.

The 2017 legislative session convened on Jan. 4. A list of House bills can be viewed at iga.in.gov.
