STATEHOUSE (Feb. 20, 2017) — State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) was recently presented the 2017 Legislator of the Year Award by the Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers for his work to better address mental health issues in Indiana.

“Working toward more efficient and effective ways to tackle mental health problems in Indiana is crucial and the process doesn’t happen overnight,” Steuerwald said. “Giving Hoosiers the opportunity to seek out treatment options is another step in the right direction and our state continues to recognize areas where we can better address this issue.”

The group annually bestows its 'Outstanding Legislator of the Award' to a legislator who has demonstrated a commitment to mental health and substance abuse treatment in Indiana.

Matt Brooks, president and CEO of the Indiana Council of Community Mental Health Centers, presented the award to Steuerwald.

“This year's award to Rep. Greg Steuerwald is the result of his ongoing legislative support to provide mental health and addiction treatment to individuals who have been incarcerated,” Brooks said. “Through the efforts of Rep. Steuerwald, Indiana is now able to ensure more individuals leaving prison and jails are able to access treatment for addiction, thereby reducing recidivism rates and improving their quality of life. The Indiana Council commends Rep. Steuerwald for his efforts in helping to redefine addiction as a health condition versus a criminal behavior."

Steuerwald continues to make mental health issues a priority this session, co-authoring legislation that would broaden mental health and addiction treatment options in Indiana.

In order to continue decreasing the number of offenders who return to prison, House Bill 1006 would look to provide addiction treatment services in the future to individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses. Steuerwald said connecting them with Recovery Works services sooner could prevent more serious offenses from occurring.

State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) represents House District 40, which is a portion of Hendricks County.
