STATEHOUSE (Sept. 4, 2018) — The Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary will meet Wednesday at the Statehouse to discuss issues related to the Department of Child Services, according to State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon).
Steuerwald, chair of the committee, said legislators will take a closer look at recommendations made by the Child Welfare Policy and Practice Group, who was asked to examine the current performance of child welfare functions of the agency and compare it to generally accepted national practice standards and outcome measures.
“Our committee has been tasked with studying the recommendations and developing a comprehensive plan to improve the state’s child welfare system,” Steuerwald said. “We realize this is a critical issue and may call for changes to state law. The goal is to bring solid policy proposals to the legislature so we can better serve Indiana’s most vulnerable children.”
The study was designed to identify prominent strengths and challenges, and produce recommendations for needed changes.
The Interim Study on Courts and the Judiciary will meet at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, in Room 431, at the Statehouse. Public comments will be taken at the meeting.
