Starting a career is a top priority for college graduates and soon-to-be graduates. Internships are not only a great way for young Hoosiers to expand their professional connections and gain hands-on experience, which can really set them apart from other jobseekers. That's why I encourage local students looking for a rewarding and unique internship to apply with Indiana House Republicans for the 2023 legislative session.
Interns receive an $800 bi-weekly stipend, with the opportunity to apply for a $3,000 scholarship to use for undergraduate and graduate expenses. Students can also earn academic credit through their college or university.
The internship is full time, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the legislative session that runs from January through April. Internships are open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, as well as recent college graduates, and law school and graduate students. All majors are encouraged to apply, and previous political or government experience is not required. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31.
Interested? Our recruiters will be at Purdue University Northwest on Sept. 30 and Valparaiso University on Oct. 20 to meet with students about our internship during the schools' career fairs. I encourage students to take advantage of these opportunities to meet and speak with many great employers, but also stop by our table to ask questions, and talk about what we do and what our internship can offer.
This is not only a unique opportunity to strengthen tangible skills employers are looking for, but also to work one-on-one with lawmakers from across the state and their professional staff. Many of our interns use this experience to jumpstart a career in public service or launch into the private sector.
There are several different departments looking to hire interns. Our legislative operations team is looking for interns to help track and research bills, and work with constituents who have questions or need assistance. The communications team is also looking for hard-working students to help write news releases and email newsletters, produce audio and video content, and help with the caucus' weekly podcast and blog. If you're a student interested in public policy and research, our policy team needs help analyzing and tracking legislation, and preparing committee reports.
