STATEHOUSE (June 30, 2023) – Hoosier military members are set to receive much-needed tax relief thanks to a new law supported by State Reps. Jim Pressel (R-Rolling Prairie) and Jake Teshka (R-South Bend).

Currently, active-duty service members are eligible for a $5,000 deduction from the state individual income tax. Under the new law recently signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb, active-duty military members will receive a complete income tax exemption beginning in January regardless of their deployment status. Pressel said National Guard and reserve members already receive a $5,000 deduction, and a full income tax exemption when mobilized or on duty.

"Our military members serve our country with honor and distinction, and they deserve our support," Pressel said. "This tax cut will help them save money, and encourage them to live, work and raise a family here."

According to Teshka, who co-authored the law, other states, including Michigan and Kentucky, offer a full income tax exemption to all service members.

"Exempting the income tax for military members that protect our great nation is way we can show them our state cares," Teshka said. "This will allow them to keep more of their hard-earned money and encourage them to call Indiana home after their service."
