STATEHOUSE (June 29, 2023) – Hoosier military members are set to receive much-needed tax relief thanks to a new law supported by State Reps. Julie Olthoff (R-Crown Point) and Hal Slager (R-Schererville).

Currently, active-duty service members are eligible for a $5,000 deduction from the state individual income tax. Under the new law recently signed by Gov. Eric Holcomb, active-duty military members will receive a complete income tax exemption beginning in January regardless of their deployment status. Olthoff said National Guard and reserve members already receive a $5,000 deduction, and a full income tax exemption when mobilized or on duty.

"I was eager to support this new law and cut taxes for our active-duty military members," Olthoff said. "These brave men and women serve our country at great personal sacrifice, and they deserve our gratitude and support. This tax cut is another way to show our appreciation for their service."

According to Slager, co-author of this new law, several other states, including Michigan and Kentucky, already offer a full income tax exemption to all service members and it is important for Indiana to remain competitive.

"Indiana supports our nation's military members and veterans," Slager said. "We believe this tax cut will encourage our service members to remain in the Hoosier state and others to make Indiana their home."
