STATEHOUSE (Feb. 20, 2025) – State Rep. Kyle Pierce (R-Anderson) co-authored legislation to ensure greater accessibility at school extracurricular activities or events, including athletic events, by requiring that a cash payment option be available to attendees starting in July 2025.
“By requiring a cash payment option at school events, we are taking a simple step toward ensuring that all families can attend and participate, regardless of their preferred method of payment," Pierce said. "This bill helps make our schools more welcoming and accessible to everyone.”
According to a study by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, school districts are increasingly shifting to cashless operations. House Bill 1064 would require school corporations to provide a cash payment option at all extracurricular activities and events where an admission fee is charged, starting on July 1, 2025. The legislation aims to remove barriers for individuals who prefer or need to pay with cash instead of digital methods, particularly in rural areas where access to electronic payment systems may be limited.
"Access to school events should never be limited by how you choose to pay," Pierce added. "I’m proud to stand behind a bill that prioritizes inclusivity and convenience for our families.”
Additionally, Pierce said the legislation would empower parental choice by enabling families to select schools that best fit their child's academic, extracurricular and athletic needs, free from restrictive policies. The bill would also foster fairness by eliminating prohibitions on transfers for athletic reasons, ensuring all students are treated equally under school transfer policies.
Pierce said IHSAA policies include ensuring a cash payment option for tournaments. This would extend that effort to more events.
House Bill 1064 passed the House and now moves to the Senate for further consideration. For more information, or to watch session and committee meetings live, visit iga.in.gov.
