STATEHOUSE (Feb. 13, 2025) – State Rep. Ethan Lawson (R-Greenfield) co-authored two key pieces of legislation that passed the House, aimed at protecting and empowering Hoosier veterans and members of the Indiana National Guard.

House Bill 1111 would enhance benefits and protections for Indiana National Guard members by increasing state-provided benefits in the case of a death in the line of duty and expanding workers compensation eligibility and medical insurance options for Hoosier soldiers and airmen who serve on state active duty.

The bill would also broaden scholarship opportunities for recipients of the National Guard's tuition supplement program by allowing them to use funds for credentialing, trade certifications and apprenticeship programs.

"As the grandson of a veteran and having been an employee of the Indiana National Guard, I’ve witnessed the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve," Lawson said. "Our veterans and service members deserve our support, both during and after their time in uniform. I am proud to co-author these bills and strengthen resources and protections for our service members, veterans and their families."

House Bill 1670 would establish the Veteran Empowerment Act, which cracks down on claim sharks, bad actors who overcharge and take advantage of veterans when applying for VA benefits. The bill strengthens oversight to protect veterans from fraudulent and misleading claims. Lawson said he met with Hancock County Veteran Service Officer Bob Workman and former Greenfield Mayor Chuck Fewell, both veterans, who discussed the need for legislative action.

Those assisting, consulting or advising veterans regarding benefits for a fee would not be able to use international call centers or data centers for processing veterans' personal information, use a veteran's personal log-in, username or password in order to access medical, financial or government benefits, and would have to undergo a national criminal history background check before accessing a veteran's medical or financial information.

House Bill 1111 and House Bill 1670 passed the House with bipartisan support and now move to the Senate for further consideration. For more information, or to watch session and committee meetings live, visit iga.in.gov.
