STATEHOUSE (Jan. 27, 2025) – State Rep. Lori Goss-Reaves (R-Marion) authored legislation aimed at enhancing educational opportunities in space science and technology for students across Indiana.
“Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are essential pathways for the future of our state and country,” Goss-Reaves said. “This bill would provide students with hands-on learning experiences in the exciting fields of atmospheric and outer space exploration. By investing in the next generation of scientists and engineers, we are preparing them for a brighter future.”
House Bill 1207 would establish the Space Science and Technology Grant Program, which would provide grants to eligible entities to develop and implement high-quality, innovative educational opportunities in schools. These programs would focus on space science, particularly atmospheric and outer space exploration, to inspire students and foster interest in STEM careers. The bill would also establish the Space Science and Technology Fund to provide financial support.
“This bill would introduce new possibilities for students, giving them access to learning experiences that could fuel their curiosity and encourage them to pursue careers in science and technology,” Goss-Reaves said. “It’s important to equip our students with the tools and knowledge they need to compete in a rapidly evolving world.”
Goss-Reaves said the bill tasks the Indiana Department of Education with developing criteria to award grants to eligible entities, which could include public, charter, and state accredited nonpublic schools. Goss-Reaves said the bill received support from educators, school administrators, and STEM advocates who believe the program could spark greater interest in space science and inspire students to pursue careers in the growing fields of space exploration and technology.
