STATEHOUSE (May 29, 2024) – State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown) recently presented a Sagamore of the Wabash award to Shenandoah Middle School science teacher Bill Gast in recognition of his outstanding involvement in the community.

“Bill's dedication and commitment to his students and their futures are truly remarkable,” Criswell said. “I, along with so many others in our community, am thankful for his many years of selfless service, and it was an honor to present him with such a prominent award."

Criswell said Gast has been a science teacher at Shenandoah Middle School for over 45 years. He helped start the Shenandoah Youth Volleyball Club and the Shenandoah Robotics Club, providing students with opportunities to explore their interests and talents beyond academics. Criswell said Gast also was pivotal in organizing the annual eighth grade field trip to Washington, D.C., which has continued for decades.

"The annual field trip to our nation's capital has enriched the lives of countless local students over the years," Criswell said. "Bill's meticulous planning, dedication and tireless efforts to ensure each trip is not only educational, but also memorable, has been transformative for them."

Dating back to the mid-1940s, the Sagamore of the Wabash award is the highest honor the governor can bestow and is presented to Hoosiers who have rendered distinguished service to the state, contributing greatly to Indiana’s rich history.
