STATEHOUSE (July 31, 2020) – Several Lawrence County businesses recently received the Governor’s Half Century or Century Business awards recognizing their longstanding service in the community, according to State Reps. Chris May (R-Bedford) and Steve Davisson (R-Salem).

"Locally owned businesses are essential to the spirit of any community," May said. "It's important to celebrate companies like these, which have managed the many ups and downs, and transitions that come with running a business."

According to May, these Lawrence County businesses, based in Bedford, which May represents, were recognized for remaining in continuous operation in Indiana for at least 50 or 100 consecutive years and demonstrating a commitment to serving the community:

  • Applacres, operating for 83 years, received the Governor's Half Century Business Award;
  • IU Health Bedford Hospital, operating for 51 years, received the Governor's Half Century Business Award;
  • Keach & Grove Real Estate, operating for 107 years, received the Governor's Century Business Award; and
  • Stokes & Housel CPAs, operating for 52 years, received the Governor's Half Century Business Award.

Holiday Drive In Theater in Mitchell, which Davisson represents, received the Governor's Half Century Business Award operating for 59 years.

"This landmark survived the transition to the digital age and provides families a much-needed source of entertainment every summer," Davisson said. "This year, the theater found innovative ways to serve the community during a time of tremendous upheaval, and this creativity can keep the business going for decades more."

The 76 Indiana companies and organizations honored with the Governor’s Century or Half Century Business awards will be invited to participate in the 2021 ceremony, with this year's spring ceremony canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

More than 1,560 Hoosier businesses have been recognized during award's 29-year history.
