STATEHOUSE (Aug. 16, 2024) – The Shields Farm in Sullivan County recently received a Hoosier Homestead Centennial Award for being in operation since 1894, according to State Rep. Bruce Borders (R-Jasonville) and State Sen. Greg Goode (R-Terre Haute).
"The Hoosier Homestead awards honor the remarkable dedication of families who have preserved and nurtured their farms for over a century," Borders said. "These families are the backbone of Indiana's agricultural tradition, and their contributions have significantly shaped our state's rural landscape. This recognition is a tribute to their enduring hard work and commitment."
"Indiana has a strong agriculture legacy thanks to family farms like this one, which has helped the state become one of the nation's top agriculture producers," Goode said. "The Hoosier Homestead Award is a great way to honor our state's rich tradition of family farms, and I congratulate the Shields family for earning this recognition."
Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
This farm family was among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
