STATEHOUSE (Aug. 18, 2023) – The Reed Farm in St. Joseph County recently received a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award for being in operation since 1853, according to State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty) and State Sen. Ryan Mishler (R-Mishawaka).
"Farming is deeply rooted and a part of so many lives in Indiana," Teshka said. "Operating a farm for more than 150 years is a testament to this family’s hard work and determination."
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"Agriculture makes significant contributions to Indiana's economy, cementing it as an invaluable profession for our state," Mishler said. "I am pleased to represent a community dedicated to continuing their family heritage for decades, and I congratulate the Reed Farm for receiving this award."
These farm families were among 103 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to agriculture.
Hoosier Homestead award ceremonies are conducted yearly in the spring and summer to commemorate farm families for their legacies and contributions to Indiana's agriculture industry. Since the program started in 1976, the state has honored more than 6,000 farms with this designation.
