STATEHOUSE (Aug. 17, 2023) – Madison County farms owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years were recently honored with Hoosier Homestead awards, according to area legislators.
"Family farms contribute greatly to Indiana's agriculture heritage and our economy," said State Rep. Kyle Pierce (R-Anderson). "I congratulate these Hoosiers and wish them many more years of continued success."
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"Indiana's agricultural industry is second to none, thanks in large part to the time and work these families put in to succeed," said State Rep. Elizabeth Rowray (R-Yorktown). "These homesteaders are a clear representation of Hoosiers' fortitude and work ethic, and they should be proud of their accomplishments."
Located in Madison County, these farms were presented Hoosier Homestead awards:
"Operating any business for more than 100 years is no easy feat," said State Rep. Chris Jeter (R-Fishers). "The hard work of Hoosier farmers does not go unnoticed, and I'm incredibly grateful for these families and their many years of service to our community."
These farm families were among 103 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to agriculture.
"It is always amazing to see just how many Indiana family farms stand the test of time and have thrived for over 100 years," said State Sen. Mike Gaskill (R-Pendleton). "These farms are the lifeblood of our state's agricultural industry, and recognizing them through Hoosier Homestead award is just one way we can thank them for their dedication and hard work."
Hoosier Homestead award ceremonies are conducted yearly in the spring and summer to commemorate farm families for their legacies and contributions to Indiana's agriculture industry. Since the program started in 1976, the state has honored more than 6,000 farms with this designation.
