STATEHOUSE (Aug. 17, 2023) – The Maitlen Farm in Delaware County recently received a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award for being in operation since 1837, according to State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) and State Sen. Scott Alexander (R-Muncie).

"Growing up on a family farm, I understand the long hours it takes to maintain and succeed in this business," Prescott said. "That's why families like this, having continued that work for 100 years or more, are so impressive. Congratulations to these Hoosiers for their dedication."

"It is truly incredible to have the opportunity to honor a family farm that has been around since before the Civil War," Alexander said. "Farms such as the Maitlen Farm are not only a great representation of the Hoosier work ethic, but a genuine look back at our state's agricultural history. I commend them on this amazing achievement."

Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.

The farm family was among 103 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to agriculture.

Hoosier Homestead award ceremonies are conducted yearly in the spring and summer to commemorate farm families for their legacies and contributions to Indiana's agriculture industry. Since the program started in 1976, the state has honored more than 6,000 farms with this designation.
