STATEHOUSE (Aug. 17, 2023) – Clay County farms owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years were recently honored with Hoosier Homestead awards, according to area legislators.
"Family farms represent so much of Indiana's history and the best of what this state has to offer," said State Rep. Alan Morrison (R-Brazil). "These families deserve this recognition for their enduring commitment."
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"As someone who grew up on a farm, I understand the amount of work it takes to maintain operations like these," said State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute). "I commend these families for their many years of hard work and perseverance."
Located in Clay County, these farms were presented Hoosier Homestead awards:
"Farms like these are the reason our state continues to be a leader in agriculture," said State Sen. Jon Ford (R-Terre Haute). "Operating a family farm for more than a century is a wonderful accomplishment and I am happy to see these families recognized for their commitment."
These farm families were among 103 awardees recently recognized at the State Fair for their commitment to Indiana agriculture.
Hoosier Homestead award ceremonies are conducted annually in the spring and summer to commemorate farm families for their legacies and contributions to Indiana's agriculture industry. Since the program started in 1976, the state has honored more than 6,000 farms with this designation.
