STATEHOUSE (Aug. 17, 2023) – The McCain Farm in Carroll County recently received Hoosier Homestead centennial and sesquicentennial awards for being in operation since 1858, according to State Rep. Heath VanNatter (R-Kokomo) and State Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette).
"Family farms have played a major role in our state's history and continue contributing to our economic success," VanNatter said. "Our farming community is strong thanks to these Hoosiers, and their persistence and hard work deserves recognition."
"As the eighth-largest agricultural exporter in the country, Indiana is a farming leader thanks in large part to our family farms," Alting said. "The McCain Farm's perseverance and dedication is a testament to the Hoosier work ethic that made this state one of the strongest, which is why they greatly deserve this honor."
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
The farm family was among 103 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to agriculture.
Hoosier Homestead award ceremonies are conducted yearly in the spring and summer to commemorate farm families for their legacies and contributions to Indiana's agriculture industry. Since the program started in 1976, the state has honored more than 6,000 farms with this designation.
