STATEHOUSE (April 22, 2022) – Jackson County communities will receive more than $2.1 million in state matching grants for road and bridge improvement projects, according to local lawmakers.
In total, 223 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $107 million in state funding through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. Funds, awarded twice a year, are for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, guardrail replacements and signage, and can cover material costs for chip sealing and crack filling operations.
"This grant program is a game-changer for many of our smaller, rural communities that may not have had the budget room to make infrastructure improvements otherwise," said State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour). "As Indiana continues to invest in its future, we want to make sure every Hoosier community is a part of the state's success story."
Area grant recipients include Jackson County $983,240, Crothersville $256,333 and Seymour $928,683.
As part of the grant program, established in 2016 and expanded through laws supported by Lucas, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer.
"Community Crossings was designed to ensure state and local governments worked together to make road and bridge improvements," said State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford). "The program has resulted in much-needed infrastructure projects being completed across Indiana, which helps ensure the state keeps moving in the right direction."
State Rep. J. Michael Davisson (R-Salem) said, to date, Hoosier communities are on the receiving end of more than $1 billion in Community Crossings Matching Grants.
"Indiana is in a strong financial position where we can continue investing in essential, local infrastructure projects," Davisson said. "Community Crossings has helped immensely in preserving Indiana's reputation as the Crossroads of America."
According to the Indiana Department of Transportation, which oversees and awards the grants, the next call for projects is expected in July. More information can be found at in.gov/indot/communitycrossings or by emailing LPAQuestions@indot.in.gov.
