STATEHOUSE (Sept. 5, 2023) – Local lawmakers are seeking interns to join them at the Statehouse during the 2024 legislative session.
According to State Rep. Dale DeVon (R-Granger), House interns will be paid $900 bi-weekly as they work in downtown Indianapolis during session, which starts in January and concludes mid-March.
"House interns will be able to boost their skills while learning a lot about the legislative process, state government and public service," DeVon said. "Mixing what they learn in the classroom with real-world experience provides students an advantage when applying for jobs."
State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-North Liberty) said House internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors.
"As a former intern, I was able to see and learn what it was like behind-the-scenes at the Statehouse, and the experience really helped ignite my passion to serve others," Teshka said. "I hope more local students join me at the Statehouse next session and take advantage of this incredible opportunity."
Paid, spring-semester intern positions are full time, Monday through Friday, and include free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through the student's college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
According to State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola), students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, policy, and communications and media relations.
"College students and recent graduates have a great opportunity to build and develop professional skillsets and connections through a House internship," Wesco said. "Students can get involved with their state government while networking, earning college credits and getting paid."
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
