STATEHOUSE (May 12, 2021) – Legislation supported by local lawmakers protecting Hoosiers' right to gather for religious worship services during future public emergencies is now law.
During the early months of the pandemic, in-person religious services were prohibited, which State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-South Bend) said cut constituents off from critical services and connections. Senate Enrolled Act 263 prohibits the state or other government bodies from restricting the right to worship in-person, classifying religious gatherings as essential.
"Our community is home to many Hoosiers with diverse backgrounds and religious beliefs," Teshka said. "Each of us must be able to worship freely and without the government impending on these freedoms."
Under the new law, State Rep. Dale DeVon (R-Granger) said other religious activities like food pantries, daycares or school services can also not be more restricted than other essential services.
"Religious institutions often offer much more than Sunday services," DeVon said. "Shutting down churches during the pandemic left a tremendous impact on churchgoers and those who benefit from their other charitable services or daycare."
Americans' mental health in 2020 was worse than at any point in the last two decades, according to an annual Gallup poll. Frequent church attendees showed the least change in their mental health ratings, which State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola) said is a strong indication of the value that religious institutions can offer individuals and society.
"As a pastor, I know firsthand how important it is for congregations to connect and worship together," Wesco said. "While steps can be taken to keep our church family safe, it is never the government's role to regulate our religious practices."
Senate Enrolled Act 263 is effective July 1, 2021. Visit iga.in.gov for more information.
