STATEHOUSE (Aug. 26, 2021) – Whether studying economics, telecommunications or history, St. Joseph County legislators said local college students and recent graduates can gain valuable hands-on work experience by interning with Indiana House Republicans at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.
"As a former intern, this program helped instill in me a passion for public service," said State Rep. Jake Teshka (R-South Bend). "I am fortunate to have participated in the internship program where I developed a strong foundation for my career, both in the private business sector and as an elected official."
According to State Rep. Dale DeVon (R-Granger), internship positions are open to college sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students and recent graduates of all majors. He said students can apply for internships in a variety of departments related to their field of study, including legislative operations, communications and media relations, policy and fiscal policy.
"Interns work side-by-side with lawmakers and staff helping Hoosiers across the state," DeVon said. "Every position within our program plays an important role, especially during the legislative session when we are busy holding committee hearings, crafting laws and meeting with constituents. Whether your aspirations are to work in television, join a law firm or own a business, our internships can help prepare you for your next step."
Interns will work at the Statehouse in Indianapolis for the duration of the 2022 legislative session, which kicks off in January and concludes mid-March. The paid, spring-semester positions are full time, Monday through Friday. Interns receive biweekly compensation of $750, free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and can earn academic credit through their college or university. Interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"Many talented young professionals participate in the House Republican Internship Program each year, and it's always exciting to watch them learn and grow professionally," said State Rep. Tim Wesco (R-Osceola). "I hope to see many students from our community at the Statehouse this upcoming session."
Wesco said to visit indianahouserepublicans.com/internship for more information and to apply before the Oct. 31 deadline.
