STATEHOUSE (July 10, 2024) – Southside legislators recently received appointments to serve on interim study committees, which will meet throughout the summer and fall to explore policy issues and work together to identify solutions.

Legislators will hear testimony from the public, various experts and stakeholders as they work on bill recommendations ahead of the budget session in January.

State Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) will serve as chair of the Interim Study Committee on Education. He will also serve on the Midwestern Higher Education Compact Commission, the Governor's Workforce Cabinet and the Education Commission of the States.

"Hoosier students need a safe learning environment to thrive in school," Behning said. "Lawmakers will look at additional steps that could be taken to ensure students' safety, as well as what can be done to improve school attendance."

State Rep. Julie McGuire (R-Indianapolis) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Education. She will also serve on the Commission on the Social Status of Black Males.

"Maintaining safe schools and regular attendance are crucial to students' success," McGuire said. "To help them have a brighter future, we need to provide a safe and engaging learning environment and consider factors that are keeping them from regularly coming to school."

State Rep. Michelle Davis (R-Whiteland) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Education, and the Interim Study Committee on Courts and the Judiciary. She will also serve on the Indiana Civic Education Commission.

"Addressing the evolving needs of our students is critical," Davis said. "Our work this interim will lay the groundwork for legislation focused on improving school attendance and the classroom environment."

State Rep. Craig Haggard (R-Mooresville) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Environmental Affairs, and the Interim Study Committee on Public Safety and Military Affairs.

State Rep. Peggy Mayfield (R-Martinsville) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Public Policy. She will also serve on the Indiana Commission for Women and the Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs.

State Rep. Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources.

State Rep. Mike Speedy (R-Indianapolis) will serve as a member of the Interim Study Committee on Financial Institutions and Insurance.
