STATEHOUSE (Dec. 19, 2022) – Local legislators recently received appointments to serve on key House standing committees at the Statehouse.
House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House Speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members' two-year terms. State Rep. Jim Lucas (R-Seymour) will serve as vice chair of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, and as a member of the House Local Government Committee and the House Public Policy Committee.
"As a former Marine, I understand the challenges facing veterans and their families," Lucas said. "There is always work to do to further support those who have sacrificed for our country. I remain committed to working with my fellow committee members to better serve those who served our great nation."
State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) received an appointment to serve as chair of the House Local Government Committee and as a member of the House Natural Resources Committee.
"Committees are where a lot of the heavy lifting occurs as far as crafting and evaluating legislation," May said. "I look forward to diving into issues that matter to Hoosiers and ensuring the voices in our district are heard at the Statehouse."
State Rep. Stephen Bartels (R-Eckerty) received an appointment to serve as vice chair of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, and as a member of the House Public Policy Committee, and the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. He was also appointed as Assistant Majority Whip, a House Republican leadership position. He said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.
"Increasing public safety, supporting law enforcement and reducing inefficiencies in government are always among my top priorities," Bartels said. "I also look forward to exploring ways we can improve our criminal justice system, which is being negatively impacted by the growing rates of addiction and mental health issues. As a veteran, I will also continue our efforts to help Hoosier service members with a successful transition from active duty to civilian life."
House lawmakers are scheduled to convene for session at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 9. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars, and watch committee meetings and session.
