STATEHOUSE (March 12, 2021) – State Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) at the Statehouse recently honored Chesterton native Kayla Harris with a House resolution for being named an Indianapolis NBA Rising Star All-Star.
Soliday, a co-author of House Resolution 12, said "Rising Stars" are high school seniors who demonstrate leadership in their schools and communities, and they receive a $2,100 scholarship. Harris was 1 of 21 Indiana students selected for the scholarship.
"Kayla has a true passion to lead and serve, and she is using her creativity and love of art to do it," Soliday said. "She has a positive impact on our community and those around her, and she will continue to make a difference in people's lives for years to come."
Harris attended preschool at the Duneland Family YMCA and has been there ever since, now serving as a Y volunteer and camp counselor. She has a strong passion for art of all forms, whether it is competing in ballroom dancing or displaying her work at art festivals in the summer. She is an active volunteer with the Chesterton-Duneland Kiwanis, Duneland Chamber and Chesterton Art Fair.
Harris plans to study environmental science after graduation. For more information about the Indianapolis NBA Rising Star All-Star program, visit nba.com/pacers.
