STATEHOUSE (Feb. 1, 2024) – State Rep. Ed Soliday (R-Valparaiso) recently presented a Sagamore of the Wabash award to Valparaiso Mayor Matt Murphy for his service and contributions to the community.
Murphy has served the past 4 years as Valparaiso's mayor, leading the city through the pandemic, and has dedicated over 20 years as a member of the city leadership team. Soliday said the city is grateful for Murphy's commitment and leadership through the years.
"Matt has worked hard to make Valparaiso into a thriving city, with highly rated schools and a vibrant downtown," Soliday said. "I'm thankful for all of his efforts and appreciate his dedication to improving and supporting this community."
Soliday said during his time as mayor, Murphy led the city through the COVID-19 pandemic while balancing public health concerns with the needs of Hoosiers and businesses. He was also recognized for keeping the community informed and engaged in new health protocols and supported small business through the creation of innovative grant programs.
Murphy also served on the Valparaiso City Council, Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission, Porter County Council, Valparaiso Economic Development Corporation and the Valpo Schools Foundation.
According to Soliday, Murphy's dedication was instrumental in projects to revitalize downtown Valparaiso, including completion of the Elevate Valpo Downtown Plan that contained research, stakeholder engagement and renovation options.
Dating back to the 1940s, the Sagamore of the Wabash award was created by former Gov. Ralph Gates. It is the highest honor the governor can bestow and is presented to distinguished Hoosiers who have made significant contributions to the state of Indiana.
