STATEHOUSE (Nov. 3, 2023) – Significant state funding is in route to local communities to help complete road and bridge projects, according to area legislators.

State funding is available for local projects through the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, including road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements and other items. In total, over 180 towns, cities and counties will receive more than $91 million in state matching grants.

"Our streets and highways play a major role in our day-to-day lives, and it's important that they are well-maintained for years to come," said State Rep. Cory Criswell (R-Middletown). "This program gives much-needed funding for local leaders to ensure roadways in our area are safe and efficient."

Area grant recipients include Shelby County ($1 million) and Shelbyville ($343,258).

"It's important that our roads and bridges are safe and functioning to keep Hoosiers and our economy moving," said State Rep. Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville). "Community Crossings is a great tool for local communities to utilize because it helps stretch budgets farther and allows for necessary infrastructure improvements to be made sooner."

To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities provide a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.2 billion to improve local roads and bridges.

"Our roads play a vital role in Hoosiers' life all across the state," said State Rep. Robb Greene (R-Shelbyville). "With this resource, communities and counties of all sizes can use this funding to make important improvements, ensuring safer travels."
